Klarrio U.S. Leads Effort to Fill VA Hospital PPE Void in Triangle Area
APEX, N.C.– April 1, 2020 –Klarrio U.S., a leading provider of streaming data and analytics solutions, is heading a collaborative effort to manufacture and distribute face shields for the Durham VA and Fayetteville VA hospitals.
The drive is designed to help local healthcare providers alleviate the current shortage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Volunteers are culling their resources to produce and donate face shields for use in the hospitals’ low-risk areas, freeing up other PPE to be used in treating confirmed Covid-19 patients.
The shields are being 3D printed based on Open Source designs from Prusa Research and Boorg.com. To reach the goal of producing several hundred units, individual makers and organizations who can help with production are encouraged to go to http://faceshield.klarrio.us/ for details about the face shields and logistics.
Klarrio is sponsoring the drive, and CEO Jim Smith is managing the overall effort. Other contributors include:
- RiOT (ncriot.org), Tom Snyder, Executive Director – equipment
- Boaty Ball (boatyball.com) Bob Wall, co-founder – manufacturing
- Aeva Labs (aevalabs.com), Zach Fearnside, co-founder – manufacturing
- Apex Friendship High School Academy of Engineering & Advanced Manufacturing; Derek Mullins, Technology Education Instructor
- Michael Utecht, volunteer liaison for Durham VA hospital
- Jeffrey Kline, volunteer liaison for Fayetteville VA hospital
“Raw materials are very difficult to find right now because many university hospitals have already bought large quantities of the plastic materials needed to make face shields,” said Jim Smith, CEO of Klarrio U.S. “But we have identified other materials we can use to produce the shields now, while the need is critical, rather than later.”
Organizations and individuals interested in contributing to this effort may contact Smith at jim.smith@klarrio.com.
